English Department obtained its educational operation on March 9, 1984 based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the RI Number.:
0120/0/1984 with status REGISTERED. Then, the English Department was officially established in 1987 based on the Decree of th Minister of Education and Culture Number: 0648/0/1988 on December 24, 1988. In 1995, the English Department obtained status EQUATED based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education Number: 31/DIKTI/Kep/1995. In 1998, teh English Department was accredited with score “B” based on the Decree of BAN Dikti No.: 01161/Ak-I.1/UMMPGI/VIII/1998, dated August 11, 1998. The second accreditation was also “B” based on the Decree of BAN Dikti No.: 06093/Ak-VII-S1-039/UMMPGI/XI/2003, dated November 6, 2003. The last accreditation was in 2008 in which the English Department obtained score “A” on August 14, 2008 based on the Decree of BAN-PT No. 018/BAN-PT/Ak-XI/S1/VIII/2008. Because of the eligibility, the English Department also obtained a re-determination of EQUATED status for Undergraduate Program of the universities in Kopertis Area VII Surabaya and an extension letter on the department oparation at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Structurally, the English Department is under the Faculty of Teacher Traing and Education (FTTE) University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

            The English Department of the University of Muhammaidyah Malang has formulated a long term program which is devided into seven development groups, namely:

1. Development program of education and teaching
2. Development program of research 
3. Development program of community service
4. Development program of human resource
5. Development program of facilities and infrasrtuctures
6. Development program of cooperation
7. Development program of institutional field and organizaion
